Substance abuse is the  No. 1 health problem on Main Streets across the United States. But despite the impact it has on our selves, our families and our neighbors, most people prefer to ignore it.

For years, I have been culling news items about substance use, mental health and recovery and mailing them with a commentary to a list of friends and colleagues. My focus is on advocacy for the treatment and rights of those who suffer from these diseases. This blog and website is a continuation of that newsletter with the hope of drawing you into the conversation

I wear many hats. I am a professional in the addiction field with CASAC certification in New York; in May, I will graduate with a MSW degree from NYU.  I have been active in the New Recovery Movement as a member of the national Faces and Voices of Recovery organization a founding member of Friends of Recovery, New York (FOR-NY), and founder of Friends and Voices of Recovery, Westchester. Finally, I not only am in recovery from addiction and major clinical depression myself, I am also the spouse, daughter and parent of persons in recovery.  — Deirdre Drohan Forbes
